Mercia Angling Club holds the fishing rights to a stretch of the River Tame at Hopwas, near Tamworth, giving members access to one of the more underrated coarse rivers in the West Midlands. The Tame fishes well throughout the season, with chub, roach, perch, pike, and the occasional barbel making up the bulk of the catch.
The Hopwas stretch is a quiet, rural section of a river that has improved markedly in recent decades as water quality has recovered. For anglers who prefer river fishing to commercials, and who want a less pressured alternative to the busier Severn or Avon stretches, the Tame at Hopwas offers exactly that. Float, stick, and feeder tactics all work well, and pike fishing through the winter rewards anglers who put in the time.
The club is well established in the Tamworth area and membership information has historically been available through Tamworth Tackle on Lichfield Street. Membership prices are modest, and the focus is on accessible, locally-managed river fishing rather than large match programmes.
For Tamworth and Lichfield area anglers wanting an additional river ticket alongside The Lamb or other local memberships, Mercia Angling Club is a useful option.
