The Plough Angling Society has been active since 1888, making it the oldest known angling club in the Coventry and Warwickshire area. Based between Coventry and Rugby, the society has built its reputation around a single, exceptional home water: a 75-peg stretch of the Warwickshire Avon between the villages of Ryton-on-Dunsmore and Wolston.
The Avon at Ryton is a feature-rich, varied river fishery that holds chub, roach, dace, perch, pike, and the occasional barbel. The diversity of swims means the stretch suits pleasure anglers looking for a quiet day’s float fishing, specimen anglers targeting a personal best chub, and match anglers wanting a proper river venue rather than a commercial. Long-standing members value the rural setting and the chance to fish a river that has been continuously cared for by the same club for well over a century.
Membership cards are not transferable and must be carried and produced on request, but the rules are otherwise welcoming. The society’s longevity reflects exactly what a small, locally-run club can offer when the focus stays on the fishing and on the membership.
If you fish the Coventry, Rugby, or Leamington area and want a proper river club with deep heritage, The Plough Angling Society is well worth a look.
