Telford & District Juniors, operating under Telford Angling Association (TAA), Shropshire’s premier fishing club has one of the cleverest mission statements in junior angling: “Off their Xboxes and on to seat boxes.” The club runs a comprehensive coaching programme and competitive calendar for young anglers aged 5 to 16, with no requirement to bring your own tackle to start.

Coaching is led by Head Coach and TAA Chairman Jon Portman, supported by a team of qualified Level 1 and Level 2 Angling Trust coaches, all DBS checked. Uniquely, the club runs indoor classes alongside on-the-bank sessions, building the fundamentals before juniors hit the water, a pragmatic approach that means kids understand setup, tackle, and technique before they ever feel the buzz of a take. Local fun competitions are held at TAA fisheries and well-known commercial venues, with medals, trophies, prizes and giveaways throughout the year. Many of the squad train towards entering the Annual Junior Nationals representing Telford on the national stage.

The club’s Regeneration Project is a brilliant initiative: donated fishing tackle is given to the most dedicated young anglers for use in club sessions and at home, ensuring no child is held back by cost. Annual TAA membership is exceptional value, just £5 for juniors under 18 – opening up access to over 20 fishing venues across Shropshire including stretches of the River Severn, stillwaters, and canal-style fishing.
