Instituted on 2nd April 1817, Salford Friendly Anglers Society is by some considerable margin the world’s oldest active angling society and one of the most quietly remarkable clubs in the UK. Originally founded under the Friendly Societies Act, it began as both an angling club and a mutual aid society, with members paying into monthly savings, sickness, and death benefit policies alongside their fishing subscriptions.
The club’s beating heart is the River Irwell, once described in Parliament as “Britain’s dirtiest river” and now a quiet success story of catchment recovery. Salford Friendly Anglers were instrumental in the campaigns that helped designate the Irwell as a UK Water Framework Directive pilot project, and members continue to sit on steering committees alongside the Mersey Rivers Trust, the Wild Trout Trust, the Angling Trust, and United Utilities.
Today the Society offers free membership and free fishing across roughly 9 miles of river, 11 miles of canal, and 8 lakes including stretches of the Irwell, Salford Quays, Drinkwater Park Lake, Kingfisher Lake, the Old River Irwell at Irlam, Agecroft Pond, and the Rochdale Canal. The club’s restocking programme has reintroduced thousands of tench, bream, rudd, and carp across its waters in recent years.
Beyond fishing, the Society runs outreach with Salford Royal Hospital, mental health initiatives, and over-55s sessions, proof that a 200-year-old club can still be one of the most progressive, community-focused angling organisations in the country.
